Abstract

Demam merupakan infeksi atau inflamasi yang disebabkan oleh bakteri, virus, atau patogen lain yang merangsang pelepasan pirogen endogenus (interleukin, faktor nekrosis tumor, dan interferon). Pirogen bekerja di hipotalamus, tempat mereka memicu prostaglandin dan meningkatkan nilai acuan (set point) suhu tubuh. Hal ini memicu respon dingin yang menyebabkan menggigil, vasokontriksi, dan penurunan perfusi perifer untuk membantu menurunkan kehilangan panas dan memungkinkan suhu tubuh meningkat. Selain itu, demam juga dapat berdampak negatif yang dapat membahayakan anak antara lain dehidrasi, kekurangan oksigen, kerusakan neurologis, dan kejang demam/ febrile convulsions.
